Solo & Ensemble Last Minute Reminders

Parents and students,

If your student is participating in Solo & Ensemble, here are a couple of last minute reminders:
  • Plan to arrive 45 minutes early so you can get situated before the performance.
  • Once you arrive, the first thing you should do is locate your performance room.
  • Plan to be waiting in the room 10 minutes before your assigned time, the schedule often fluctuates, and the judge will often ask “who is ready?”
  • Students should dress up! There is no specific uniform attire, but professional/dressy is preferred.
  • Parents are welcome to watch the performances (also, other parents and students may be in the room for your student’s performance)
If you need to check the schedule, it can be found here:
Also, the contest director sent out this welcome letter and a map of Mascoutah Elementary School.
Thanks!
Mark Donahue

Jr High Semester 2 Week 7 Newsletter

Parents and Students,

The Week 7 Newsletter is attached, along with info for the McKendree band Camp.

That’s a Wrap!

Parents and students,

Phew!  The recording session is in the books.  Thank you for all of your cooperation with getting the kids to McKendree and dealing with the weather.  The session was a great experience for me, and I hope the kids got a lot out of it as well.  I can’t think of a more valuable experience for the growth of our students and the band program as a whole.  Within the next couple weeks, we will release the recordings online so you will be able to download and share what we accomplished.
I don’t say it enough, I’m humbled to get to work with such great students and supportive parents.  Thank you for all you do for our kids and the band as a whole!
I’m looking forward to a great performance and clinic at the festival tomorrow!
Thanks!
Mark Donahue

Roads Update

All,

Just drove back to O’Fallon from McKendree, Road Crews have been out and both Lebanon and Hwy 50 are in much better shape than one hour ago.
Still, be cautious and drive safely!
Mark Donahue

Symphonic Winds Recording Weather Update

Parents and Students,

The administration has given us the go ahead for the recording session.  That being said, we all need to be cautious!  As the snow has just about stopped, we will delay the start in order to give road crews more time.  We will now be meeting at 4:30 at the Hett.  We should still be done before 7pm.
I am currently at the Hett and just drove here, a couple things to consider:
  • The roads are not great, but drivable, please drive slowly and plan for double the usual amount of time to reach where you’re going.
  • The good news is there isn’t much wind so the snow isn’t drifting
  • There wasn’t any ice on the way here, but be cautious.
  • Highway 50 is not great (I was going about 30 in my wimpy Chevy Cavalier, but it felt secure)
If you do not want to drop off and pick up, we will set out chairs in the lobby so you have a comfortable place to stay.
If you are not comfortable with the driving, please let me know ASAP.
Above all else, please be careful and cautious.
Thanks,
Mark Donahue

Symphonic Winds Recording 2/14 Weather

Parents,

Today, the symphonic winds is scheduled to record at McKendree’s Hettenhausen Center for Performing Arts.
There is a chance of inclement weather.  We are monitoring the situation closely, and the administration will make a decision no later than noon tomorrow, which will be relayed via email.
I am working on a backup recording session location and time given the possibility.
For your convenience, I have attached the itinerary and driving directions:
Thanks!

Semester 2 Week 6 Jr High Newsletter

The Semester 2 Week 6 Jr High Band Newsletter is now available.

This week there are parent teacher conferences on Thursday afternoon and Friday. If you would like to meet in person or over the phone to discuss your student’s progress or come up with a personal plan to challenge them, please let me know! Most students are in the band program in D90 for four years with me, I want to ensure we’re maximizing every student’s potential!

Solo & Ensemble is right around the corner, at this point, students
should have the piece almost entirely learned, and should be working on refining and adding details. If solos or ensembles would like to
meet on Friday, I do not have m any conferences on the schedule currently.

Next week, we will have a Band Booster Meeting on Tuesday, February 16th, at 6:30pm in the Fulton Band Room.

5th Grade Band Updates

Parents and 5th Grade Students,

Happy Labor Day!  We had an awesome turnout and record enrollment in the 5th grade band this year!  We have a couple things coming up this week and a couple of changes, please read below closely.
We will have our instrument pick up nights this week.  During these nights, students will receive their instruments, then we will teach them how to assemble them, care for them, and play their first notes.  Parents should plan on attending for the duration.

  • At the instrument pick up nights, we will be accepting the $90 registration fee.  This must be paid by Friday, the first day of band.
  • At the instrument pick up nights, we will also have bus information posted with the specific bus numbers students will be riding to their home schools after band.
  • I apologize, it was not made as clear as I had hoped during my presentation last week, in addition to the instruments, students will need:
    • Essential Elements Band Book
    • Music stand for home practice
    • Reeds, valve oil, or other instrument specific supplies
    • These will be available at the instrument pick up night through Music & Arts
  • Due to the large number of students in band, we will not fit all of the students at Carriel on Fridays.  For this reason, Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, and Saxophones will meet at Fulton Jr. High only on Fridays.
  • The first day of band starts this Friday at Carriel for trumpets, horns, trombones, baritones, and percussion, and at Fulton Jr. High for Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, and Saxophones.
  • The Music & Arts reps have been working all weekend to put together the instrument orders for this week.  Due to the large volume, I do expect some errors, I am asking for your patience, they will work hard to rectify any mistakes.

Instrument Pick Up Nights
Tuesday, 6-7:30 at Carriel
Flute

Wednesday, 6-7:30 at Carriel

Summer Band Updates

Parents and Students,

I hope you’re all having a fantastic summer!  Here are a couple updates I wanted to share with you as we slowly approach the beginning of the school year:

  • Symphonic Winds-The auditioned honor band was accepted to play at the Illinois Music Education Conference in January.  This is a huge honor for the District 90 Band Program, and we are already beginning the planning process.  Auditions for the band will take place in the first two weeks of school in the evenings by appointment.  Please see the calendar for specific days and here for the audition music.
  • Music of the Night 5k-Lifelong Music in O’Fallon Schools is sponsoring the 3rd annual “Music of the Night 5k” on August 8th.  This is a really fun night race that goes to support the Jr. High Music Programs.  The Jr. High Band will be providing music for the event.
    • To register for the race, go here.
    • For band students who would like to play at the event (and get ice cream after) sign up here.
  • Parent BoosterGroup-we have been working closely with the administration to implement a parent booster group for the band program beginning this year.  The first meeting will be on Tuesday, August 25th at 6:30pm in the Fulton Band Room.
  • Private Lessons-In order to keep the best OTHS students interested in being mentors, we are raising the price from $5 to $8 per lesson for high school mentor lessons.
  • Calendar Updates-Our tentative calendar for the 15-16 school year is on the website.
  • Contact Info-I send email updates and contact using the emails you provide to me.  Please take a couple of minutes to fill out the contact info form.

Thanks!
